Background
Qualicum Beach is on the eastern side of Vancouver Island and looks across the Strait of Georgia at the Sunshine Coast backed by the Coastal Mountains. Its protected location provides moderate weather and lots of sunshine. It was home to First Nations people before European settlers arrived around 1878. An English family built their log cabin home which still stands today. The town was mainly involved in forestry until the railroad was built in 1914 and tourists discovered all the area has to enjoy.
Vacationers, some as well known as Shirley Temple and Spencer Tracy, came to the Qualicum Beach Hotel. Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Course was built to test the skill of locals and visitors alike. Buena Vista by the Sea has been a vacation destination since 1937. Inns, lodges and waterside cabins were built to host a growing tourist trade.
Qualicum Beach Today
The Chamber of Commerce says that Qualicum Beach defines “the beauty of small”. It’s a small town that appreciates its warm, friendly atmosphere and the simple pleasures of life. We’re only a two hour drive from Vancouver or a ferry ride if you prefer, but Qualicum Beach real estate is a world away.
There’s no big box, small box or chain anything here. The downtown shopping area looks like a quaint village of charming buildings. They house unique shops and businesses offering goods of all descriptions. Browsing is a pleasure. Wembly Mall, between Qualicum Beach and Parksville, has shops and the bonus of Oceanside Place Ice Arena for year round skating.
The Farmer’s Market is held most Saturdays. If you are interested in more cultural pursuits you’ll find a full schedule of summer performances at the Village Theater and museums highlighting the area’s history. There are art galleries and some local artists open their studios to visitors. Local churches support a range of religions.
School District 69 considers staff, parents, students and the community as interlocking pieces of an education puzzle; all are needed for success. There are two elementary schools, one middle and one secondary school. The district also supports an independent home based online learning plan for K through adult education. An active International Student Program brings students from around the world to broaden the horizons of all involved.
