Parksville History
If you're looking at Parksville real estate, visiting the Craig Heritage Park Museum is a good way for you to get a feel for the history and development of the city. Historic buildings have been moved to the museum site and exhibits detail the life of early settlers and more recent times. You'll discover that First Nations people were joined by European settlers in Parksville in the 1870’s.
The population increased significantly when the railroad reached here in 1910. Tourists brought new business to diversify the economy which had been fueled mainly by fishing and forestry. Today Parksville has all the ingredients that make it a wonderful place for people of all ages to live, work and visit. When you visit though, just be prepared to want to stay.
The Welcoming Land
The motto on Parksville’s Coat of Arms is “The Welcoming Land”. That’s a true reference to the natural riches of the area and the warm friendly people who make their home on a piece of Parksville real estate. The broad sandy beach along our part of the Vancouver Island coast meets the rolling ocean waves of the protected Strait of Georgia making swimming and sand castles favorite pursuits. In fact there is an annual festival to celebrate the art of sand sculpting.
Because the scenery is beautiful and the weather is exceptional, most people want to spend time outdoors. In Parksville there is a lot to do. Golfing on one of six courses competes with windsurfing, kayaking and sailing on the calm waters. Mountain biking and hiking are popular. Black Brant Geese have been vacationing here during their annual migration since before our town was settled. Our wildlife area draws animal lovers year round.
Parksville offers more than just outdoor recreation. Arts and crafts are part of the culture here too. We have a number of galleries; many of them include work of local artists in their collections. A number of artisans open their studios to visitors where you can watch the creation of weavings or sculptures, paintings, glass or carvings by the artist in residence.
The Parksville Community and Conference Centre billed as “A Gathering Place” is the largest facility in the Oceanside region. You can host a banquet for up to 380 guests or a theatre presentation for 550 in the auditorium. Other rooms are perfect for a meeting or seminar. There is a gallery which displays local art for sale.
