The 5,000 residents of Nanoose Bay may live in a small town with a country atmosphere, but they bring the world to their scenic water wonderland.
Things to Do In the Nanoose Bay Area
Boaters, fishermen, even US Navy personnel visiting the Canadian Forces Base, are drawn to the area because there are locations perfectly suited to water activities of all kinds. Fishing is very good, especially salmon and trout. Fishing charters are popular. You can even try your hand at clam raking when it’s low tide on certain beaches.
You can sail, canoe, windsurf or go kayaking. Guided tours, instructions and rentals are possible. You may even be joined by some curious sea lions as you paddle. The town is situated on a peninsula overlooking the Strait of Georgia where a number of small islands improve the view. Nanoose Harbour, created in the protection of the peninsula, is home to a selection of marinas providing hundreds of berths and services of all kinds to local and visiting watercrafts.
Jedediah Island Provincial Park is accessible by boat from Nanoose Bay. If you want serene wilderness
surrounded by old growth trees, bring a picnic and enjoy the ocean views. Wilderness camping is available for those who want to stay longer. It’s a perfect location for kayaking too.
If you don’t have sea legs or an interest in fish, you might want to climb up Nanoose Hill and survey the ocean from that spectacular vantage point. At the Fairwinds Golf and Country Club, you can play the course surrounded by towering trees as you determine your strategy around more than 70 sand traps and water features. We have a skateboard park, areas created for mountain biking, horse rentals and hiking trails to entice you. And we're less than 20 miles from larger town resources in Parksville or Nanaimo.
Wildlife is abundant at the western end of the harbour, where the Nanoose unit of the Qualicum National Wildlife Area protects almost 200 species of birds and other animals. Migrating birds of many kinds are yearly or twice yearly vacationers here. Bald eagles arrive when salmon spawn in streams and rivers along the coast. You can spend a peaceful afternoon surrounded by the abundance of nature.
