Coombs and Errington

A few miles inland from Parksville, you’ll find the small towns of Coombs and Errington in the foothills of Arrowsmith Mountain.  They share the beauty and warm spirit that is so prevalent on Vancouver Island but each of these pieces of Coombs and Errington real estate has unique features to present.

About Errington

Errington, population of 3,500, is named after a small English village and is the keeper of the gate to Englishman River Provincial Park and Falls.  Two majestic waterfalls cascade into the canyon between them before dropping into the Englishman River.  Hiking trails take you through old growth forests or to a gorge and waterfall or to petroglyphs depicting a bear and two whales made by an artist long ago.  You can fish along the banks of the river for rainbow or cutthroat trout.

The North Island Wildlife Recovery Association nurses injured birds and mammals so they can be sent back to their homes in good health.  The May Neish Learning Centre on the site helps visiting humans have a better understanding of wildlife and allows viewing of animals who aren’t able to be released and make their home at the center.  You might see an owl or a black bear, a hawk or an eagle.

Tiger Lily Farm introduces young visitors to farm animals and encourages hands on action such as hugging, feeding and milking.  Birthday parties are a specialty. Party goers can hug a lamb, ride a pony, feed the chickens and eat the cake.

About Coombs

Coombs is a little village that was settled around 1910 by English and Welsh immigrants through a Salvation Army program.  The Coombs General Store which was opened then is still in operation.  Another highlight is Coombs Old Country Market, best known for the family of goats that graze on the grass roof.  The town is home to many gift, craft and antique stores so browsing is a very interesting activity.

The Coombs Rodeo ground hosts a variety of local events.  Come in July to enjoy the Coombs Country Arts and Crafts Fair. You might enjoy the Fiddlers Jamboree or a bluegrass festival.  The annual Coombs Rodeo is a highlight of the year. The Kulth Music Fest showcases folk music performances with electronic and reggae musicians as well.

Bring your camera and prepare to be awed as you walk among the host of exotic free flying butterflies in the indoor rainforest at Butterfly World.  Or visit the Emerald Forest Bird Garden and get acquainted with the exotic birds living there.
